Hearing: Hearing Impairment

Hearing impairment, also called deafness or hearing loss, occurs when theres a problem with or damage to one or more parts of the ear. There are types of hearing impairments called Conductive hearing loss and Sensorineural hearing loss. The level of impairment depends on the individuals specific circumstances.

The timing of hearing impairments can vary with each person. Congenital hearing loss is present at birth, Acquired hearing loss occurs later in life, childhood, teen years, or adulthood. It can be sudden or progressive. Today, there are 28 million Americans who suffer from some type of hearing impairment.

Causes of Hearing Impairment
The most common cause of hearing loss among children and teens is an ear infection which affects the middle ear. Ear infections are fairly common in young children, but medications can usually clear them up and return hearing to normal. Blockages in the ear such as dirt, wax, or a foreign object can cause Conductive hearing loss.

Other cases result from abnormalties or damage to parts of the ear. Sensorineural hearing impairment results from problems with the inner ear or the auditory nerve. Hearing impairments can be treated depending on the individual.
